How it works

Three pieces, fitted in an afternoon

No wiring, no drilling, and nothing plugged into your network. The sensors are battery powered and the hub uses your existing broadband.

A sealed sensor, on the shelf

The whole sensor goes inside, among the contents, and nothing passes through the door seal, because there is no cable. Thermal mass in the housing means it tracks what the medicines feel, so a drug round does not set it off.

Every sensor reports to one box over long-range radio, through brick and across floors, no repeaters. It holds a battery and its own copy of every reading, so a power cut leaves no hole.

Readings arrive signed and cannot be quietly altered. At month end you export a daily row of minimum, maximum and the reading at your nominated check time, which is the shape an inspector already knows how to read.

There is no cable. Most designs run a lead out through the gasket and try to make it thin enough not to matter. We put the whole sensor inside instead, so the guidance cannot be breached rather than being narrowly satisfied.

On a domestic fridge the compliant way to route a cable does not exist. Pharmaceutical fridges have a probe port; plenty of the appliances in daily use, in care homes especially, do not. Removing the cable removes the argument.

What happened to the medicines?

The temperature is not the point. Whether the drugs are still usable is. So resolving an alert asks what caused it, what you did, and the field most systems have no box for: what was decided about the contents. Choose confirmed safe and it records who advised you, by name, because that is what CQC asks about.

Every reading is signed where it was taken

Each sensor signs its readings before they leave the appliance. The hub relays them but cannot read or alter them, so no box on your premises can change your history.

Nothing is ever overwritten

Records are added, never edited. A correction is filed alongside the original with a reason, and both stay visible.

A quiet sensor shouts as loudly as a breach

A fridge nobody is watching is the failure paper already has. A silent sensor stays an open item until a person closes it.

The record declares its own gaps

How complete the month was, any missing readings and why, and how many defrost cycles were set aside. Publishing your own holes is what makes the rest of it believable.

An alarm nobody believes is worse than no alarm

Most temperature monitoring cries wolf. Staff mute it within a week, and after that it is decoration. Two decisions prevent that.

It knows a defrost cycle from a fault

A frost-free freezer warms above −10 °C for fifteen minutes every few hours, entirely normally. We know that signature, do not wake anybody, and declare how many we set aside in the export.

It wakes the person who can act

Alerts follow who is on shift, not who installed the app. A breach at 3am goes to the people in the building; the manager sees an escalation, not a phone buzzing all night.

Questions

The things managers ask first

Is this approved by CQC or the GPhC?

No product is, and be careful of anyone who says theirs is. Neither regulator approves or certifies monitoring equipment. They publish guidance and then inspect your records.

What we have done is design against that guidance, and against the sheets your local ICB actually hands out, so the export lands in a shape an inspector recognises. The record is the same underneath whichever of them is standing in your medicines room.

What happens if the broadband goes down?

The hub keeps recording and keeps sounding local alerts, because it evaluates your temperature limits itself rather than asking a server. When the connection returns it uploads the backlog, so the record has no gap.

A power cut is the same story: the sensors run on their own batteries, the hub switches to its internal one, and the outage itself becomes a record of when power went, how long it lasted and the peak temperature reached.

How often do batteries need changing?

By your staff, never. The sensor is sealed shut so that condensation cannot get into it, which means there is no battery door and nothing for anyone to open on a shelf.

It runs for over two years on a single cell, and is exchanged for a freshly calibrated unit on its service visit, so one visit does both jobs. The old one comes back to us to be refurbished, recalibrated and reissued.

Worth comparing against the paper routine: guidance recommends changing the batteries in a fridge thermometer every three months and keeping a separate battery change sheet to prove you did. That whole task disappears.

Do our staff still have to check the fridges?

You keep whatever daily review your policy requires, and so does the guidance. What disappears is the writing down, the resetting, the scanning and the filing. The daily check becomes a glance at a screen that is already filled in.

Where is our data held, and for how long?

In the United Kingdom, in a London region, and kept for seven years. Care home guidance asks for one year as a minimum, CQC expects vaccine storage history kept for five, and US programmes ask for three. Storage is cheap enough that retention should never be the reason a record is missing.

Built by the people who designed the hardware

JVION is a British electronics company. The sensor boards, the radio link, the hub, the firmware and the software all come from the same workshop rather than being bought in and badged.

Our sensors come back to us. At the end of a unit’s service life it is returned, stripped, resealed, recalibrated and put back into service rather than binned.
